Laser Surgery

LASIK (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is the most commonly performed and well known vision correction surgery.  Using an excimer laser, the surgeon re-shapes the cornea so that images are focused to the correct spot on the retina (the light receptor of light in the eye).  The success rate with this procedure is excellent if the patient is properly screened by the co-managing optometrist. The LASIK procedure itself involves little or no discomfort (or pain) both during the procedure and through the recovery process. Finally, there are other refractive procedures such as LASEK, PRK, and ICL which may be more appropriate for you and give you the best possible visual outcome.

Reasons to consider LASIK:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia).
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia).
  • Astigmatism (irregularly shaped cornea).
  • Desire to decrease or eliminate dependence on glasses or contacts.

During your pre-operative exam, we will determine if you have any medical problems that may interfere with refractive surgery or healing. Some of these problems can be treated so that you can expect the best possible outcome from surgery.

Your pre-op exam includes at least the following:

  • Quality and quantity of tear production. Dry eyes need to be treated before surgery.
  • Determine the health status of your eye lids and their associated glands.
  • Measure your corneal thickness
  • Topography of cornea
  • Large pupils (certain procedures may be better for you than others)
  • Is your prescription within the acceptable range?
  • Cycloplegic refraction

During the post-operative period, we will continue to monitor your eyes at regular intervals to make sure that they are healing properly and that you have achieved your desired goal for your visual acuity.

Laser surgery is not a cure-all. Having the surgery does not guarantee that you will not need to wear contacts or glasses again.  Most people still need reading glasses when they are over 40. Besides for reading, glasses may be necessary for all close activities such as conversation, reading your watch or phone, and computer work. That said, laser surgery can provide a good solution and can help you see better without contacts or glasses. Before choosing the surgery, we strongly advise you to educate yourself thoroughly on the procedure-- its benefits and its shortcomings. We would be please to assist you on this very important decision.

The defining difference between the various procedures lies in the layer of the cornea that is treated and how that layer is exposed.

First, a thin flap is created. Next, the laser is applied. Lastly, the corneal flap is replaced.
